From the first day, two lampposts marked the way. Everything in Novi is downstream of these two.
In how models are built. If a model is hard to build, or hard to read, the tool has failed, not the modeller. Sophistication should come through simplicity, never instead of it.
In the engine underneath. Planning should answer at the speed of thought, so the engine came first, before a single screen was drawn.
That's why we didn't start with a user interface. We started with an engine: the Semantic Financial Modelling Tool (an in-memory, multidimensional data grid, and the predecessor of Novi). Novi is what grew on top of it.
Both of us are active in the FP&A, EPM and AI community. We write about modelling, the craft, and where finance and AI are actually heading, not where the hype says they are.
